Assessing GP Performance: A Collaborative Project Between More Metrics and Lancaster University

Thursday 1st August 2024

We are very excited to be working with the MSc team at Lancaster University. This continues our longstanding involvement with the university sector, including a project with Cardiff University, our regular undergraduate internship placement and more recently with University College London and the Consumer Data Research Council (CDRC) on Covid data.

Project Objective

The primary objective is to assess General Practitioner (GP) performance using patient satisfaction scores and health outcomes such as disease diagnosis and mortality rates. This initiative aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of GP services across England, identifying areas for improvement and contributing to better healthcare delivery.

Why the Project Matters

This project holds significant importance due to its vast scope and potential impact on communities across England. GP performance is a critical aspect of the healthcare system, and evaluating it through patient satisfaction and CQC ratings can lead to substantial improvements in service delivery. Given the frequent coverage of healthcare issues in the news, this project is timely and addresses a key area of public interest. We hope that the outcomes of this work will have the potential for real-world impact, influencing policy and practice in healthcare.

Project Involvement

The project is an extension of an existing More Metrics initiative focusing on the GP Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) data. It will involve a detailed literature review to understand the current landscape and identify gaps. The core of the project will be the statistical analysis and visualisation of complex data to derive meaningful insights. The team will consider how to apply these findings to real-world scenarios, aiming to produce actionable recommendations that can be implemented in the healthcare sector.

The project is being undertaken by two MSc students under the direction of Dr Chris Kirkbride, MSc supervisor with input from Nigel and Colin from More Metrics. We asked a set of quick fire questions to our two students:

Nivethitha Kalathil Suresh

- Where's home: Nivethitha hails from Tamil Nadu, India, and holds a bachelor's degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
- Interests: She enjoys travelling, working on analytical projects, keeping up with world affairs, and learning about financial investments.
- Future Plans: Nivethitha aspires to work as a Business Analyst in the NHS or a multinational corporation.
- Additional Comments: "I'm happy that I could work with More Metrics on a project that aligns with my goals and interests. I hope to deliver actionable insights and outcomes from this project."

Charan Kakarla

- Where's home: Charan comes from Bangalore, known as the silicon city of India.
- Interests: He is passionate about statistics and mathematics, and also enjoys reviewing movies.
- Future Plans: Charan aims to gain experience as an analyst.
- Additional Comments: "I'd really like to thank More Metrics for providing me this opportunity to explore myself in the field of data and helping me gain some knowledge regarding the same."

The collaboration between More Metrics and Lancaster University represents a significant step towards enhancing GP performance evaluation in England. By leveraging patient satisfaction scores and CQC ratings, the project aims to produce insights that can lead to tangible improvements in healthcare delivery. The involvement of enthusiastic students like Nivethitha and Charan not only contributes to the project's success but also provides them with invaluable experience in the field of data analysis and healthcare. This project also underscores the importance of data-driven approaches in improving public health services and highlights the potential for substantial real-world impact.

Good luck to Nivethitha and Charan and we look forward to sharing the outcome of their work over the coming months.
